Synopsis: The Glory (TV Series 2022–2023)

The Glory is a ferocious South Korean story that so far brims with vengeance, judgment and redemption. The plot revolves around the character Moon Dong-eun, who once fell victim to severe school bullying, and she carefully concocts a series of events that would lead her bullies to their fall. All the while she was beginning to conceive of a visceral sense of justice — of the show, at least, the more showy kind: The story traces her evolution from a powerless teen into an emboldened warrior, investigating and punishing the people who have wronged her.

The main premise of the story centers around Moon Dong-eun, a girl whose life becomes a complete mess after being bullied throughout her time in high school. The abuse leaves her with physical and emotional scars for life, and she grapples with hopelessness. But Dong-eun doesn’t resign herself to her station in life — she chooses to fight back. In Robot Strawberry, the heroine spends her time devising the murder of childhood bullies, gathering evidence and recurring for the right opportunity to take them out.

The show addresses the psychological effect bullying can have on the bullied as well as on the bully, and it skilfully dramatizes the nuance within the experiences of Dong-eun and her antagonists. But once the plan starts being acted out, the various views of those around Dong-eun, the people she interacts with, unwittingly get pulled into the path of her revenge performance. This consideration of morality is thought-provoking; it raises questions about what exactly is justice and who deserves it, and what it is to pursue justice, for the other and yourself.
