Info In Movie News | Jisoo BLACKPINK's has been confirmed to play in the upcoming zombie series, Newtopia. She is set to play the character Kang Young-ju, the girlfriend of Lee Jae-yoon portrayed by Park Jeong-min. Coupang Play, the streaming service set to air the series, confirmed the two stars as the main cast of Newtopia, as reported by Yonhap on Thursday (1/8).
Newtopia will follow Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min) and Kang Young-ju (Jisoo) as they traverse the deadly, zombie-riddled streets of Seoul.
Young-ju, an entry-level worker, is waiting for her military-service-committed partner, Jae-yoon, to be discharged. Young-ju is so frustrated that Jae-yoon doesn't seem to recognize how she is feeling.
Then Young-ju gets some bad news about his relationship amid all this. She goes to face Jae-yoon in person, only to discover that a zombie outbreak has already decimated the populace. It forces her to transform into a much stronger person as she struggles to live.
Jae-yoon, meanwhile, starts serving in the military at 26 after trying to take alternative service in the defense industry. He shows deep anxieties about the future and an obsession with his girlfriend, which gives him an idea of what to do with Young-ju.
Though feeling unsure of himself, he slowly rises to the occasion, as he and Young-ju go head-to-head with the zombies.
The news comes about a year after rumors circulated that Jisoo would be involved in the project, which was originally titled “Influenza.”
The series is a collaboration between the screenwriter Han Ji-won, known for co-scripting the screenplay for "Parasite," with Bong Joon-ho, and Ji Ho-ji. And they will be collaborating with Yoon Sung-hyun, the director of "Bleak Night" and "Time Hunt."
Newtopia also reunites Park Jeong-min and Jisoo after they both starred in “Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman” (2023) — with Park Jeong-min as a shaman and Jisoo as a Taoist deity.
In addition, Im Sung-jae who starred in "The Worst of Evil," "Moving," and "D.P. season 2" will be included in the drama.
No more details have been announced yet for Newtopia whether there will be a global streaming service or not. But the series is slated to come out in 2025.
