In the tension-filled series "Parasyte - The Grey," a strange invasion of parasitic organisms from outer space brings life on Earth to its knees. They make humans into hosts and once transformed, the parasites can transform their heads to anything that they like, making them evil and very dangerous. The story takes place in a world where society is fairly oblivious to any existential threat, thanks a secretive police group called “The Grey.”
Main Plot
The drama opens with the establishment of “The Grey,” a dedicated police team headed by the passionate Choi Jun-kyung. The group's goal is to protect society from parasite attacks, and to conceal these attacks from being revealed to the public. Jun-kyung’s motivation is intimate — her husband was among the initial victims of the cosplay, now a brutal hunting dog, brought to heel, masked and captive, who helps the team by detecting other parasites.
Jeong Su-in is a dull supermarket cashier whose life goes topsy-turvy after a drunken customer stabs her in a near-fatal encounter. She wakes up in the hospital to find the assailant dead — and herself a Parasite. The change is because a parasite tried to take over her brain while she was unconscious, but was unable to finish what it started because it focused on healing her injuries.
The new life of Su-in, embattled as she is bogged down by other parasites believing to verify her identity. This shocking turn of events is seen through the eyes of Seol Kang-woo, a small-time thug whose family has been deeply affected by the parasites, one of whom is his older sister; his younger sister is missing. Kang-woo dubs Su-in's parasite "Heidi" after the duality of Jekyll and Hyde, since Heidi can only partially take control of Su-in's body, protecting her in moments of danger.
Then, things get real when Su-in is brought to a remote church where a parasitic pastor preaches to an audience of parasites. This is where Kang-woo finds the body of his younger sister, triggering a panic-fuelled escape with Su-in. The chaos is investigated by the police officer Kim Chul-min, who comes with a history of protectively hovering over Su-in since her abusive childhood, but is drawn ever deeper into the warring between the two families.
Team Grey eventually picks Su-in up after suspecting she’s changed despite her negative tests. Chul-min and Kang-woo team up to save her during a transfer, but they’re ambushed by a pack of parasites, and the mission goes sideways. Though Chul-min dies a tragic death to the pastor's parasite, that parasite takes on Chul-min's appearance to infiltrate the team and intensify the fight against parasites.
When Su-in tells Jun-kyung that parasites have invaded Team Grey, Jun-kyung doesn’t believe her at first, but she soon embarks on her own investigation. Towards the end of the story, Su-in and the parasite that has commandeered Kang-woo’s sister’s body devise a plan to kill the pastor’s parasite during a local festival, adding fuel to the fire for an epic showdown.
