Synopsis: Harold and the Purple Cranyon (2024)

Harold is a special boy with a magical purple crayon that makes anything he dreams of, real. As a child living with loneliness, he invented a world within the pages of his book with two loyal companions: a moose and porcupine As time passed, Harold grew up to be a wise adult, using his crayon to problem-solve and explore infinite adventures. But he soon questions his own life and origins.

An errant voice — Harold’s creator, the man from the “real world” outside his fantasy universe. Intrigued yet forbidden from heading there, Harold defies his creator and uses his crayon to access the real world. From four of them, this colorful three-dimensional reality comes alive through Moose and Porcupine, and through them Harold, who assumes human form.

Harold's adventures in the real world are equal parts awe and confusion, especially when he encounters Mel, a creative young boy, and Mel's skeptical mother, Terri. With his crayon, Harold aids the family in small but extraordinary ways, but his magical antics often lead him into unintended trouble — doodling actual pies, summoning flying toys and even inadvertently wreaking havoc at Terri’s workplace. Despite the misadventures, Harold and Mel grow to be close friends, and Harold hands over a piece of his crayon, which the boy uses to effectuate his own imaginary creations.

Meanwhile, a frustrated librarian and would-be author named Gary Natwick discovers the magic of Harold’s crayon. Consumed by jealousy and a lust to turn his literary fantasies into reality, Gary tricks Harold into giving him the crayon. Gary also uses it to trap Harold and Mel, flipping their world upside down. Mel’s bravery restores Harold’s confidence, giving the pair the guts to escape and take on Gary in a dramatic magical-dueling showdown.

The last act had Harold, Moose, Porcupine and Mel team up to defeat Gary who gulps down the crayon and casts powerful spells. Through working together and quick thinking, they recover the crayon and undo Gary’s havoc. Harold gives Gary redemption by opening a portal to a world where Gary’s literary fantasies are realized, and he can no longer be a threat to anyone.

Harold and his friends then go to the museum that is devoted to his creator, Crockett Johnson, and discover that Harold had been conceived as an embodiment of the unlimited power of imagination. Harold embraces where he came from and resolves to return to his own world with Moose and Porcupine. As Mel is about to leave, Mel gives Harold a box of crayons with bright colors for his adventures.
