But when a young boy named Alex Elliot finds the legendary sword Excalibur, he unwittingly becomes part of an ancient prophecy. As legend has it, King Arthur once ruled Britain with Excalibur, and upon his passing it was prophesied that the sword would return to the country when it was needed once more. Alex and his best friend Bedders must assemble a gang of unlikely allies to stop the evil Morgana, Arthur’s half-sister, from being resurrected and plunging the world into darkness during a deadly eclipse.
Alex’s odyssey begins when he stands up for Bedders against bullies Lance and Kaye, and soon he’s fighting along with them. In an attempt to flee, Alex finds Excalibur stuck in a rock at a construction site. When Alex removes the sword, Morgana awakens and sends her fiery skeletal warriors to fetch the sword back. Looking for guidance, Alex meets Merlin, who takes the form of a quirky teen and explains Alex’s part in this battle.
Reluctantly at first, Alex forms his own version of the “Knights of the Round Table” with Bedders, Lance and Kaye. United, they set out on a dangerous journey across Britain to face Morgana in her lair. They encounter a series of hurdles, whether magical foes, insecurities and an ultimate test of bondedness and leadership.
As their bond deepens in preparation for the ultimate confrontation, Merlin trains the group in swordsmanship and the Code of Chivalry. In a climactic showdown at their school, Alex and his student army go up against Morgana’s army of animated skeletons. Morgana is finally defeated, using Alex to behead her with Excalibur before her remnants are trapped in a magical portal created by Merlin.
In the aftermath, Alex returns Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake for safekeeping. Merlin, now in his adult form, assures Alex and his friends that their adventure will become legend, inspiring future generations.
Character Details:
Alex Elliot (Louis Ashbourne Serkis): A plucky and resourceful boy who turns out to be an unlikely possessor of Excalibur. Although initially, it was said that Alex can never rise to become a great leader as expected, but eventually, he became a capable leader who inspired the qualities of honor, courage, and unity.
Bedders (Dean Chaumoo): Alex’s loyal best friend, who provides comic relief and unwavering support. Bedders begins somewhat timid, but discovers inner bravery on the quest.
Lance (Tom Taylor): A former bully who joins Alex’s quest after being humbled by the power of Excalibur. Lance’s metamorphosis into a faithful knight demonstrates the theme of redemption in the story.
Kaye (Rhianna Dorris): A former bully, Kaye learns about the value of working together and becomes a fierce, trustworthy ally in the battle against Morgana.
Young Merlin (Angus Imrie): A quirky and bumbling take on the once and future wizard who provides the guidance and magic. He has such youthful energy, but then you're listening to centuries worth of knowledge.
Adult Merlin (Patrick Stewart): Merlin’s true form, who comes at moments of great need to dispense key advice and encouragement to Alex.
Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson): The main villain, an ancient sorceress bent on retrieving Excalibur and enslaving the world. Her constant reworking into a dragon just makes her scarier.

Sophie (Genevieve O'Reilly): Alex’s aunt, who explains why his father has been absent and the origins of the Arthurian book that spurs on Alex’s journey.
The Lady of the Lake: The magical protector of Excalibur, who helps Alex by reconstituting the sword and receiving it back into her keeping after Morgana’s defeat.
Morgana’s Skeletal Warriors: By far the most annoying of bloody minions, fiery knights summoned by Morgana who were the relentless antagonists throughout Alex’s journey and the main course at the end.
The Kid Who Would Be King is designed to be an exciting and aspirational re-telling of the Arthurian legend, meshing contemporary dilemmas with enduring lessons on courage, camaraderie, and the ability to come together.
