A young man who finds himself waking up in a steel elevator with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The lift screeches to a stop, and is opened by a pack of young males, one of whom, Gally, drags the clueless newcomer into an expansive grassland surrounded by towering walls. The amnesiac becomes frightened when he becomes the center of attention, lurching into a run only to discover that the area is surrounded by massive stone gates. So Alby, the leader of the gang, lets him go and explains that memory loss is a common occurrence when arriving at this place, called the Glade. He introduces him to his right-hand man Newt and explains that in their self-sufficient society, each individual plays a role, whether it be agriculture or construction. The Box, as the elevator is called, delivers provisions monthly and another male. But their predicament and the benefactor of their supplies is a mystery.
As he becomes accustomed to his new environment, the newcomer discovers a hole in the wall. He is sternly warned by Alby not to go beyond these walls, except for a small group called the " Runners" who are given the job of solving the mysterious labyrinth surrounding the Glade, called the Maze. To make matters worse, nightfall brings a hellish life in the Maze as the monstrous mechanical beasts known as Grievers continue their tirelessly patrols — terrifying creatures that keep the Dwellers from straying too far.
Transition to a new identity: In the midst of a fight with Gally, the name 'Thomas' suddenly comes to the young man's mind. But this moment of joy is short-lived, as the group soon hears the eerie cry of a Griever coming from inside the Maze. Thomas instantly gets attacked by a Runner facing him, Ben, which he perceives with great disarray as a consequence of everything that has occurred. When Ben is stung by a Griever and undergoes painful memory-jogging transformations from it, the Gladers exile Ben into the Maze as punishment.
More trouble for the Runners: Alby and another runner, Minho, venture into the Maze to solve Ben’s attack. But Alby gets stung and, in the scramble to get him out before the doors to the maze close at sundown, Thomas breaks the number one rule and runs in. It becomes a nightlong quest to find their way through the maze and avoid Grievers for Thomas, culminating with him tricking a Griever into a closing pathway, where it gets destroyed. This earns Thomas the title of a Runner, the first in history to survive a night in the Maze, despite breaking the rules.
Then things get really ridiculous with girls, right on the heels of his arrival, first he's hit on by WCKD with the lure of WCKD and a box-quote: Clutching a note that reads, “She is the last one,” she gasps Thomas’s name and collapses. When she comes to, she introduces herself as Teresa, not knowing how she knows Thomas. She also discovers two syringes with labels for WCKD, which they use to cure Alby.
Maze Runner: Thomas and Minho find a tracker inside the dead Griever, which is number 7 and has the WCKD logo. They figure out that each part of the Maze opens and closes in a specific pattern, and this indicates a possible exit in Sector 7. Exploring this area, they find a secret door that opens to an unknown underground space. Before they settle on an action plan, an assault by Grievers attacks the Glade, which remains opened for the first time at night.
The fall of Glade and Escape fail: In the midst of this, Gally takes charge, who also blames Thomas for the outbreak of panic. WCKD's test subjects, and Alby believes they can find a cure. Thomas chooses to let a Griever sting him in order to recover his memories; he discovers he and Teresa were part of WCKD and helped design the Maze. He round up a crew to enter the Sector 7 passage and get away. Gally steadfastly chooses to remain with a few others.
Death and deception in the Maze: After escaping more tussles in the passage, the team manages to turn off the Grievers for good. They discover videos that show WCKD's leader Dr. Ava Paige explaining their purpose. During a fight, Gally shoots, and Chuck sacrifices himself, taking the fatal wound for Thomas. Fuming, Minho spears Gally and kills him. With the help of armed soldiers, the survivors leave the Maze and are helicoptered away to a location of safety, where they finally see the true extent of WCKD's experiment from the helicopter (you can see the Maze from the sky). The mysterious Dr. Ava Paige (Aidan Gillan) tells them that they were never going to save them from the wreckage, though; it was all part of their grand scheme to observe the ruse, and with success! Clearly: their (rather complicit, jaded) experiment of sorts is far from being over.
