Synopsis: Daredevil season 2 (2016) - Series

Yet, after Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), was taken down, the world of Hell’s Kitchen expanded with Daredevil (Season 2) as two key characters were introduced: Frank Castle / The Punisher and Elektra Natchios. The season follows Matt Murdoch’s fight to have a balance between his life as a lawyer with his life as Daredevil while confronting brutal new threats that challenge his moral limits.

The Punisher Has a New ThreatThe Punisher Arrives

A new wave of violence in Hell’s Kitchen is emerging when a mysterious assailant starts to methodically slaughter members of the Irish Mob, the Dogs of Hell biker gang and others in the criminal underworld. The lone survivor, Elliot “Grotto” Grote, contacted Nelson & Murdock, Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) law firm, for help.

Matt, playing Daredevil, looks into the massacre and soon crosses paths with the killer — a merciless vigilante who comes to be known as The Punisher (Frank Castle) (Jon Bernthal). Their initial meeting is brutal, with Punisher firing a gun into Daredevil’s forehead at short range. Luckily, Matt's reinforced helmet saves him, but he's temporarily weakened from the impact.

At the same time, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) becomes curious about Castle’s background and does her own digging, learning that he was a Marine whose family was killed in a gang-related shootout. She discovers that the incident was hidden, perhaps due to some high-level corruption.

After a second vicious altercation, Punisher overpowers Daredevil, bringing him to a rooftop and drilling him on his ideology — while Daredevil believes in giving criminals a second chance, Punisher believes he needs to eradicate them. He elicits a choice from Daredevil: kill him, or allow him to kill a mobster, Grotto. Daredevil says no, getting free, but too late to stop Punisher from killing Grotto.

The Trial of Frank Castle

Miraculously, Castle survives an Irish Mob ambush in which he is brutally beaten and almost killed. Nelson & Murdock take his case, against Foggy’s wishes, hoping to shine a light on the corruption that led to his family’s murder. But the District Attorney, Samantha Reyes (Michelle Hurd), wants to kill her and, instrumentalizing the trial, runs a double risk of exposing herself.

As the trial goes on, Matt proves unable to concentrate, distracted by the return of his former love, Elektra Natchios (Élodie Yung), who wants his aid against the Yakuza. And then Punisher’s trial goes off the deep end — just before the final verdict, a guard whispers into his ear, and Punisher suddenly declares he likes killing. First a jury finds him guilty, and he’s sentenced to prison.

Within Ryker’s Island, Castle encounters Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), who’s constructed an empire while in captivity. Fisk promptly realizes he can use Castle as a weapon against his rivals, and manipulates circumstances so that he goes up against a prison gang, resulting in an excruciating massacre. Once Castle has wiped out all his enemies, Fisk lets him go, sending him out into the world to kill more of Fisk’s opponents.

The Hand’s Ascension and Elektra’s Dark History

Back with Elektra, she explains that the Yakuza are not just common criminals, but he's a part of an ancient ninja organization called The Hand. Matt reluctantly agrees to help her investigate what they’ve been up to, and it leads them to a massive hole in the city — a part of the secretive plan that involved human sacrifices and mystical resurrection.

As Daredevil and Elektra fight The Hand’s ninja assassins, the relationship develops to another level. But their old mentor, Stick (Scott Glenn), returns to reveal a startling truth — Elektra is The Black Sky, a mythical warrior prophesied to lead The Hand. Stick had taught her to fight her destiny, yet The Hand now want to recruit her as their leader.

Elektra, caught between her past self and love for Matt, ultimately declines The Hand. But wouldn’t you know it, she gets mortally wounded during the final showdown with Nobu Yoshioka (Peter Shinkoda), the undead leader of The Hand. An enraged Daredevil pounds Nobu, until Stick decapitates him, so we know he won’t be coming back.

The Last Face-Off: Daredevil vs. The Hand

Presumably with Elektra dead, Matt promises to destroy The Hand for good. Meanwhile, Karen, who works as a journalist now, delves deeper into Frank Castle’s past and learns that his family’s slaughter was masterminded by Colonel Ray Schoonover, a crooked military man who runs a shadowy drug operation under the moniker The Blacksmith. Additionally, Schoonover is executed by Castle, further cementing the latter's transition into The Punisher.

As The Hand tries to take the city by force and takes hostages, Daredevil leads the charge to stop them. He teams up with Punisher, who lays down cover fire, and Matt takes down the last of The Hand’s forces. In its last, heartbreaking reveal, Daredevil uncovers his identity to Karen shortly before a fight.

Meanwhile, The Hand covertly unearths Elektra’s corpse and reposes her in a supernatural sarcophagus — an indication that she will be revived in future seasons.
