Synopsis: Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Film

Directed by Doug Liman

Shortly thereafter, Earth is invaded by an unscrupulous alien race named Mimics, which have swiftly conquered much of mainland Europe. Humanity’s final hope rests with the United Defense Force (UDF), a coalition of armies from around the world as they prepare for a full-scale invasion into France in the hopes of reclaiming the planet.

Major William Cage (Tom Cruise), a U.S. military officer, is a public relations wiz who has never seen combat. When General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) orders him to fight in the coming invasion, Cage refuses. He uses bully tactics to manipulate the general into sparing him, but he’s brought down by his arrogance when he gets busted. Brigham has Cage busted down to Private and incorrectly branded a deserter. He is forcibly shipped to Heathrow Military Base, from where he’s put under the command of Master Sergeant Farell (Bill Paxton) and assigned to J-Squad, a bunch of ragtag soldiers who give him no end of grief.

The following day, the UDF attempts its invasion on the French coast, resulting in a massacre. Mimics appear to be one step ahead, launching an ambush on the human armies. Cage, who has never touched a gun and is scared out of his mind, does not know how to use his state-of-the-art combat suit. In the midst of the chaos, before he dies in an explosion, he kills a massive, blue Mimic, an Alpha.

Before he can die, though, Cage wakes up again at Heathrow Base, living the previous day over and over. He goes through the same events: meeting Sergeant Farell, being assigned to J-Squad, gearing up for the ill-fated invasion.

Cage quickly figures out that whenever he dies, he wakes up at the same starting point — at the base, before the invasion. No matter how many times he dies the day resets. He employs this bizarre talent to test out various strategies to live a little longer, but ultimately dies every. single. time.

“I Will Return to the Earth” As the anime series progresses, we learn that during one of the loops, he meets up with Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a legendary soldier known as the Angel of Verdun for her heroics during the battle (the Verdun allusion, as with other time loops, is pointed — a gesellschaft type of a world, on a grand scale). Knowing Cage can see the location of incoming Mimics and recognizes when she tells Cage:

Cage locates Rita in the next loop and learns that she once had the same power. During the Battle of

Verdun, she had gained the ability to reset time after coming into contact with Alpha Mimic blood. However, she lost it after receiving a blood transfusion. She introduces Cage to Dr. Noah Carter (Noah Taylor), a scientist who has studied the Mimics.

Carter explains that the Mimics function as a hive mind controlled by an entity called the Omega, which has the ability to reset time whenever an Alpha Mimic is killed. By doing so, the Omega learns from every failed battle and ensures the Mimics cannot lose. However, because Cage absorbed Alpha blood, he stole the Omega’s ability to reset time, making him the key to defeating the Mimics.

Rita trains Cage rigorously, forcing him to improve his combat skills in each time loop. Whenever he gets injured beyond repair, she kills him to reset the loop. Despite countless failures, Cage eventually masters advanced fighting techniques.

After multiple resets, Cage experiences a vision of the Omega’s location—a dam in Germany. He and Rita attempt to reach the dam, but each time, they are killed before they arrive. Cage realizes that Rita always dies at the same point, no matter how he tries to save her. Distraught, he starts keeping secrets from her, unwilling to let her die.

Cage decides to go to the dam alone. When he finally reaches it, he discovers that the Omega is not there—it was a trap. He is ambushed by an Alpha, which wounds him. Before dying, Cage attempts to kill himself to reset the day, but the Alpha prevents him from doing so.

Cage wakes up in a hospital, where he discovers he was given a blood transfusion — and lost his ability to reset time for good. Now he’s stuck in a single timeline where he needs to succeed in one last effort to defeat the Omega.

Knowing they have no more time left, Cage and Rita make a desperate plan. They enlist the help of J-Squad to infiltrate the Louvre museum in Paris where the real Omega is hiding.

  • Most of J-Squad members sacrifice themselves so that Cage and Rita can reach the Omega.
  • Rita kisses Cage before distracting an Alpha, allowing him to continue. She is then killed.
  • Cage, now mortally wounded, manages to drop grenades into the Omega’s core, destroying it.

The Ultimate Reset & Victory

As Cage dies, his body is once again bathed in Omega blood, and he suddenly wakes up again—but this time, much earlier in the timeline, before he was arrested. However, history has changed:

  • The Mimics have already been mysteriously wiped out following an unexplained energy surge from Paris (implying that killing the Omega affected the past).
  • Cage is still a Major, and General Brigham has no memory of their past interactions.
  • He goes to see Rita, but she does not recognize him.
  • Cage smiles, knowing that humanity has won the war and that he has finally escaped the time loop.
