Synopsis: Now You See Me: 2, The Second Act (2016) Film

Directed by Jon M. Chu

The story takes place eighteen months after the events of the first film, where the Four Horsemen—J. Daniel Atlas, Merritt McKinney, Jack Wilder, and new member Lula May—remain in hiding while awaiting their next mission from the mysterious secret society of magicians known as the Eye.

FBI agent Dylan Rhodes, who secretly works with the Horsemen, assigns them to expose Owen Case, a corrupt tech CEO. Case has developed a new smartphone designed to secretly collect users' private data and sell it on the black market. The Horsemen infiltrate the launch event in New York City, planning to expose Case’s scheme. However, their performance is sabotaged when an unknown adversary reveals that Jack faked his death and that Dylan is actually working with the Horsemen.

In the ensuing chaos, the Horsemen attempt to escape through a construction chute but mysteriously find themselves in Macau, China. They are captured by Chase McKinney, Merritt’s twin brother, and delivered to Walter Mabry, a young tech tycoon and the illegitimate son of Arthur Tressler, the billionaire the Horsemen previously robbed. Walter reveals that he was responsible for their sudden transportation and demands that they steal a powerful microchip designed to access any computer system in the world. Daniel initially refuses but later agrees in order to secure their freedom.

Forced into a corner, the Horsemen break into the Macau Science Center, where they bring their expert sleight of hand to bear to nick the chip. Dylan, meanwhile, hunts for the missing Horsemen, and is forced to join forces with Thaddeus Bradley, the magic debunker he framed in the first film. Dylan springs Thaddeus from a prison in the desert, convinced he possesses information crucial to the Eye. They go to Macau, where Dylan discovers Daniel trying to deliver the stolen chip to who he thinks is the Eye. Walter shows up, and we learn he had made Daniel believe he was handling the Eye. Walter and his men capture Dylan and store him in a safe, before throwing it into the ocean, mirroring the death of Dylan’s dad, the illusionist Lionel Shrike.

Dylan miraculously escapes using a key hidden in his father's old watch, just as the Horsemen regroup. They realize the chip they stole was a fake and resolve to turn the tables on Walter and Arthur Tressler. Assisted by magic shop owners Li and Bu Bu, who are secretly members of the Eye, they formulate a plan to expose Walter’s crimes.

The Horsemen have organized a huge magic performance in London, scheduled for New Year's Eve, and have baited Walter, Arthur, and the FBI to their location. The Horsemen do a bunch of tricks to throw their followers off the scent, but they’re caught and whisked aboard Walter’s private plane. In mid-air Walter makes them give up the stolen chip and verifies its authenticity. But, as we learn, it was all a trick—the Horsemen had never taken off, but were on a faux plane on the River Thames.

In real life, Walter, Arthur and Chase’s corrupt business dealings are beamed out to the world as they are arrested by the FBI. Once more, Dylan and the Horsemen slip away, disappearing into the night. Later they dance through the obstacles to meet at the Greenwich Observatory and meet the real ringleader of the Eye — Thaddeus Bradley. Thaddeus admits he was actually Lionel Shrike’s friend and feigned their rivalry. He also names Dylan as his successor, pushing him and the Horsemen back further into the secret world of magic.
