Directed by Louis Leterrier
The movie opens and introduces us to four talented magicians, who each receive a mysterious tarot card that invites them to a secret meeting:
J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) – A charismatic and skilled illusionist who performed in Chicago.
Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) – A former star hypnotist and mentalist now using his skills to con people in New Orleans.
Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) – A daring escapist and stage performer in Los Angeles.
Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) – A street magician and skilled pickpocket in New York.
Each follows the invitation to an abandoned New York City apartment, where they discover a blueprint for advanced magic technology. The benefactor behind the invitation remains unknown.
A year later, the four magicians have become a world-famous performance group known as The Four Horsemen, funded by wealthy insurance magnate Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine). During a show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, their final act involves supposedly teleporting an audience member into the vault of a French bank, Crédit Républicain, and stealing millions of euros. Moments later, the bank’s vault is found empty, and the stolen money rains down on the Las Vegas audience.
FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) and Interpol Agent Alma Dray (Mélanie Laurent) are assigned to investigate the heist. They interrogate the Horsemen but are forced to release them due to lack of evidence.
In search of answers, Rhodes and Dray approach Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), a former magician turned — would-be — magician trick debunker. The Horsemen probably made off with the cash weeks before the show, Thaddeus explains, but then employed an elaborate stage illusion to create the illusion that it all happened instantaneously. But what they really want is a secret.
The Horsemen’s upcoming show in New Orleans is a stunt in which they open the floodgates on Arthur Tressler’s bank account and offload his fortune to the audience — citizens whose insurance claims were rejected after Hurricane Katrina. Broke, Tressler hires Thaddeus Bradley to bring down the Horsemen.
Rhodes meanwhile gets increasingly frustrated as the Horsemen become harder to catch, always seeming to be one step ahead. Dray begins to suspect that they are working for a secret society of magicians called “The Eye,” who steal from the rich to give to the deserving.
Following a lead, the FBI pursues the Horsemen to their next crime — pilfering millions from a safe that belongs to Elkhorn Security. But when they try to catch them, things go bad, a high speed chase ends with Jack Wilder apparently dead in an fiery car crash.
When the FBI opens the stolen safe, they find it filled with balloon animals, realizing they have been deceived again.
The Horsemen’s final act takes place at 5 Pointz in New York, where they seemingly disappear into thin air after throwing counterfeit money into the crowd.
Meanwhile, Thaddeus Bradley is framed when the real stolen money is found in his car, leading to his arrest. In jail, he realizes that Agent Dylan Rhodes is the true mastermind behind the Horsemen's heists. Dylan reveals that he orchestrated everything as part of a revenge plan against those responsible for his magician father’s death.
Dylan explains that his father, Lionel Shrike, was a magician who drowned while attempting to escape from a locked safe designed by Elkhorn Security.
The four Horsemen were chosen as pawns in Dylan’s scheme to expose the people involved in Lionel's demise:
- Arthur Tressler (the insurance magnate who denied Lionel’s family’s claim).
- Thaddeus Bradley (who publicly humiliated Lionel, leading to the fatal escape attempt).
- Elkhorn Security, the company that built the faulty safe.
As the film concludes, Dylan welcomes the Horsemen into "The Eye," revealing that they are now part of a legendary secret society of magicians.
In the final scene, Dylan meets Alma Dray in Paris, hinting that she has deduced his secret but chooses to keep it. They form an unspoken bond, leaving the door open for future stories.
