Synopsis: Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

The story begins with a boy named Henry Turner who sneaks onboard the ghost ship, Flying Dutchman, in search of his father, Will Turner, who was condemned to control the ghost ship. Henry believes the curse can be canceled out with the fabled Trident of Poseidon, a mythical weapon that has the power to control the seas and end all oceanic curses. But Will believes the curse is unbeatable and orders Henry to give up on his mission. Surfy, a smurf below the ocean, Henry is compelled to return to the surface and vows to find Captain Jack Sparrow and solicit his help in recovering the trident.

Now, nine years later, Henry is serving in the Royal Navy when his frigate pursues a pirate ship into the Devil’s Triangle, a dangerous, otherworldly part of the sea. Disregarding Henry’s warnings, the captain sails the ship into the cursed waters, only to be attacked by the ghostly crew of the ship Silent Mary, led by vengeful Captain Armando Salazar. Its most notable prisoner is Salazar, a fearsome Spanish buccaneer hunter who was trapped in the triangle by Jack Sparrow years before. Released by Jack’s hapless trade of his magical compass, Salazar slaughters the whole crew and retains Henry as the lone survivor to deliver a message to Jack: Rosanne’s death is nigh.

At the same time, on Saint Martin, a young astronomer named Carina Smyth is accused of witchcraft based on her knowledge of celestial bodies. She escapes her prison and meets Henry, also wanted for treason by the Royal Navy. Meanwhile, Jack Sparrow and his dwindling crew are trying to rob a bank. They try but unfortunately fail, leaving them broke. Jack, in a desperate (and embarrassed) state, trades his magic compass for a bottle of rum, inadvertently dropping Salazar and his undead crew from the Triangle.

Having no idea who her father is but possessing his diary, Carina knows that the diary holds the key to finding the Trident of Poseidon. She works with Henry and they free Jack from the jail. They get on the Dying Gull, sailing for the Trident.

Meanwhile, Captain Hector Barbossa — rich, fearsome pirate lord — hears about Salazar’s dastardly ways and fears for the safety of his own fleet. He volunteers to lead Salazar to Jack in an attempt to save his own skin. By means of Jack’s magical compass, Barbossa finds the Dying Gull, then surrenders Jack, Henry and Carina to Salazar. Before long, Barbossa betrays Salazar and rescues Jack. He discovers that Carina is in fact his long-lost daughter, but doesn’t tell her that at first.

Barbossa, having repaired the Black Pearl, teams up with Jack and they sail onward to find the Trident. Their mission leads to a cryptic island where Carina cracks an ancient map of the stars, revealing the Trident’s location beneath the ocean. With the island’s magic they divide the sea, cleaving a path to the seafloor.

Desperate for the Trident, Salazar possesses Henry’s body, reaching for the weapon, but Henry resists him. With Jack’s assistance, he destroys the Trident, breaking every sea curse, freeing Will Turner from an eternity aboard the Flying Dutchman and returning Salazar’s crew to their human states.

Now that the sea has started to engorge itself, the Black Pearl drops anchor to save Jack, Henry and Carina. A still-vengeful Salazar tries to board, but Barbossa heroically sacrifices himself by cutting the rope, ensuring Salazar’s death while saving his daughter. Wishing to honor her father's death, Carina makes peace with her surname, Barbossa.

In Port Royal, Henry finds his father Will Turner and mother Elizabeth Swann — the curse is finally broken. The Turner family is finally back together. Not shackled to his previous entrapment, Jack assumes his position as captain of the Black Pearl and sets sail with his monkey once more.

The final post-credit scene shows Will and Elizabeth asleep at their home, where Davy Jones returns from the depths of the sea, potentially signaling a greater threat underneath the waves.

Directed by Joachim Rønning

Character Details:

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)

A former star pirate fallen on hard times. His luck has run out, and most of his crew abandons him. Nevertheless, his cleverness, devilry and charm serve him well as an indispensable ally in locating the Trident of Poseidon. As the movie goes on, his past deeds return to haunt him, most notably Salazar, who he tricked into sailing into the Devil’s Triangle years before.

Captain Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem)

The film’s main bad guy. Salazar was a ruthless Spanish pirate hunter who was cursed and trapped in the Devil’s Triangle after falling for a young Jack Sparrow. Now a vengeful undead specter, he seeks vengeance against Jack and all pirates and does not show mercy to any pirate as he hunts Jack down. His singular focus on revenge is what brings about his demise.

Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush)

A shrewd, opportunistic pirate with an extensive empire and a fleet of ships at her disposal. Originally a salve ally of Salazar to save himself, Barbossa betrays him and moves to help Jack find the Trident. This article contains spoilers to Chapter 16 of “The Rebel Princess.” His journey as a character is very emotional, because he finds out Carina is his daughter. He sacrifices himself to save her in an act of heroism.

Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites)

Henry, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, is bent on freeing his father from his curse. Dedicated but not lacking talent, and resourceful, he pursues Jack Sparrow as the means to the end of locating the Trident of Poseidon. His path brings him to Carina, with whom he clicks.

Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario)

A brilliant and headstrong astronomer persecuted for witchcraft because of her forward-thinking scientific acumen. She has with her a diary written by her unknown father that leads to the location of the Trident. During the film, she learns she is Barbossa's daughter, which helps redefine her character.

Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally)

Jack’s faithful first mate and longtime friend. Though often frustrated by Jack’s irresponsibility, he is one of his most loyal supporters.

Will Turner (Orlando Bloom)

The former blacksmith now captain of the Flying Dutchman. Doomed to sail the seas to eternity, he wishes to see his family again. Eventually his son Henry’s quest to find the Trident succeeds, freeing him from his curse and letting him return to land.

Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) [Cameo]

Will’s wife, and the woman who has been raising Henry as she waits for Will to return. She only briefly appears at the end of the film when the family is reunited.

Davy Jones (Post-Credit Scene Cameo)

The feared captain of the Flying Dutchman from earlier films. The post-credit scene suggests he might return, meaning more threats to the Turner family ahead.
