Info in Movie News | Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fans can finally rejoice, as the long-time promised live-action series has found its new home on Netflix. This much-awaited project has been in the pipeline for a while and after much turmoil, it is now officially taken over by Netflix. According to a recent report from Deadline, the series, initially intended to be named Dungeons & Dragons, has now been aptly renamed as The Forgotten Realms, striking a familiar chord with D&D enthusiasts worldwide.
Previously, the series was slated to make its debut on Paramount+, with directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the creative mind behind hits like Dodgeball and Red Notice. Unfortunately, the series' production ended up being cancelled.
The reincarnated version of the project is under the expert production guidance of Shawn Levy, celebrated for directing Deadpool & Wolverine. The screenplay will be handled by Drew Crevello, who had previously lent his creative prowess to the creation of the miniseries WeCrashed, which starred Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway.
The concept of Forgotten Realms was birthed by Canadian game designer and author, Ed Greenwood, even before Dungeons & Dragons was conceived. Greenwood initially introduced the world to this narrative through stories published in the official D&D magazine, Dragon, in the 1970s, before eventually selling it to the then owners of D&D in 1986.
Since its inception, the Forgotten Realms has emerged as one of the most popular backdrops in D&D. Unlike other settings, Forgotten Realms is more dynamic and flexible, fostering a wide range of adventures and tales. Some of the most famous characters of Forgotten Realms include Drizzt Do’Urden, a dark elf and a prominent figure in the widely popular novel series by R.A. Salvatore, Wulfgar the barbarian, and Elminster, a legendary wizard often referred to as Merlin of the D&D universe.
The enchanting world of Forgotten Realms has served as the setting for numerous D&D spin-offs, including the Baldur’s Gate game series and the movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which was released in 2023.
The attempt to adapt Dungeons & Dragons into a live-action series has been tried several times in the past. The first movie adaptation was released in 2000 and starred Thora Birch, Marlon Wayans, and Jeremy Irons. Regrettably, the film was poorly received by critics, failing to impress at the box office despite generating two direct-to-video sequels. On the other hand, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was better received by fans and critics alike.
