Info in Movie News | Street Fighter fans need to keep their patience. Sony Pictures has formally pulled the live-action movie adaptation of this legendary game from its 2026 release schedule. The decision has brought up big question marks particularly after Legendary Entertainment just announced that Kitao Sakurai (Twisted Metal) will be the new director, replacing Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me). It is then scheduled for release on March 20th, 2026. But it has been removed from Sony's domestic release calendar.
According to Collider, this is more than just a simple delay decision. If it was only a technical issue or scheduling rescheduling, the movie usually just shifts its release date. Removing it from the release calendar often indicates that there are deeper problems, like major revisions in the development process, or worse yet the whole project is uncertain. This is, of course, the subject of speculation that Sony and Legendary might want to take a step back before they return with a more mature plan.
Like a franchise that has been adapted to the big screen before, Street Fighter has had an interesting journey through Hollywood. The 1994 version, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, is now remembered as a cult classic, despite the fact that it was not a hit when it was first released. Given the current movie industry trends, the expectations of a modern reboot are significantly higher, which makes Sony's decision even more intriguing to observe.
One of the reasons that could potentially be the delay factor is the change in the creative visions protégé of Sakurai. With the new director, it is entirely possible that Legendary and Sony want to overhaul several critical elements such as the script, the character's approach, and the composition of the players. If this is indeed the strategy to ensure better quality than this can be the right step even though it feels disappointing to the fans who have been waiting for a long time.
The movie is not yet chosen for the official release schedule, but it is still in the project. Probably this means that Sony and Legendary want to do excellent work and satisfy Street Fighter fans. Meantime, the fans are to be still patient and to wait for further updates.
