Dre Parker, a 12-year-old boy from Detroit, relocates to Beijing with his mother but encounters difficulties assimilating into the new environment. He makes friends with a violinist, Meiying, and is soon bullied-out of rivalry, by Cheng, a highly accomplished student of kung fu. After a brutal beating by Cheng, Dre is saved by Mr. Han, the janitor of the building, who turns out to be a kung fu master. Dre convinces Han to take him on as a student, leading to an agreement with Cheng’s sadistic instructor, Master Li, that their differences will be settled in a kung fu match.
This unique training method taught by Han has Dre repeatedly putting on and taking off his jacket until it becomes muscle memory. But Dre slowly learns that kung fu isn’t really about beating up people — it’s all about discipline, and self-control. His understanding grows further still after he visits a Taoist temple, and he reclaims Meiying’s friendship by truly apologizing to her parents in Mandarin.
In the tournament, Dre astonishes everyone by winning consecutive rounds. Yet, Master Li commands his student to cripple Dre's leg during the semifinals. Despite the excruciating pain, Dre persists and convinces Han to heal his injury so he can proceed to compete. In the decisive match against Cheng, Dre uses the snake stance he learned at the temple to perform an extraordinary flying kick, thereby winning the contest.
Chastened Cheng walks down the room to give the trophy to Dre, and with the other students, bow down to Mr. Han as a sign of respect, and in this way, they dispel the inhuman ways of their teacher. Both strong and confident, Dre learns how to deal with his anxiety and starts to understand the true nature of kung fu— not just as a method of combat but as a kind of living.
