The Abyss to Stream in 4K on Disney+: A Sci-Fi Classic That Left Its Cast Shaken

Info in Movie News | If you are craving new James Cameron work and are eagerly waiting for Avatar: Fire and Ash, we have some good news for you. Before visiting the planet Pandora again, Disney + will take us to another of the director's earlier alien worlds—The Abyss. This 1989 sci-fi thriller will be shown in 4K from April 11, 2025, on the streaming platform.

After finishing Aliens (1986), a successful project, and before beginning Avatar, James Cameron came up with The Abyss, his first underwater sci-fi, and spent as much as $43 million on the movie budget to execute a huge project. However, the production process was a nightmare. The scenes were filmed almost completely underwater, which not only challenged the actors but the crew as well. Although Ed Harris has never spoken about it, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio did not mince her words when she commented, “The Abyss was a lot of things. Fun to make is not one of them.” The movie also created a new chapter in the history of film by presenting one of the earliest uses of CGI. In fact, this confer the film the gold statue of Special Effects Oscar.

Immersed in the period of time from the near future, 1994, The Abyss narrates the story of a civilian underwater drilling team hired by the U.S. military to help in the rescue of a sunken nuclear submarine. The tension between Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) and his separated wife, Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) escalates as both have to join forces with a Navy SEAL team led by Lieutenant Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn). With the struggle to reach their goal, they realize they are not the only human beings there—a kind of a mystical thing is hovering in the water.

Although The Abyss was not numerically one of Cameron’s highest-grossing movies, it was instrumental in causing his interest in the ocean. The movie opened the doors to his next works, such as Titanic, ocean documentaries, and Avatar: The Way of Water, which lived through vivid underwater scenes.

So, whether you’re revisiting this sci-fi classic or discovering it for the first time, don’t miss The Abyss in stunning 4K when it streams on Disney+ starting April 11, 2025!
