Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Colman Reignite Chaos in The War of the Roses Remake

Info in Movie News | Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are all set to be the protagonists in the movie The Roses, a darkly funny romantic comedy which is going to be out this summer. This picture is a reboot of the 1989 cult classic The War of the Roses, where Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner played a couple whose love story went the most funny, angry, and at the same time sad ways ever. In case you are a fan of amazing dialogues, heartfelt breakdowns, and a little bit of madness in combination with high seriousness, then this will be definitely your number one film to watch.

According to Collider, The Roses will be directed by Jay Roach, who’s no stranger to mixing drama with sharp social commentary.  Roach was once the director of Bombshell (2019) and was awarded numerous Emmy Awards for his political TV films such as Game Change and Recount. Roach is making his comeback to the film directing scene with "The Roses" after a relatively long hiatus, and the upcoming film is anticipated to be a strong return for him.

The script is being carried out by Tony McNamara, the top writer famous for The Favourite and the hit Hulu series, The Great. With McNamara’s blend of wit, sarcasm, and character-driven storytelling, it is no wonder that The Roses will bring both laughter and tear-jerking in a balanced way.

The cast is stacked. In addition to Cumberbatch and Colman, the film also stars Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, and Allison Janney, each known for their comedic timing and bold screen presence. Roach even makes a cameo, popping up in one of the newly released photos from the set. These first-look images, unveiled by Vanity Fair, give us a taste of the film’s visual tone, think sun-drenched beaches, awkwardly tense airplane scenes, and beautifully shot chaos.

What makes this film so intriguing isn’t just the premise, divorce turned into a full-blown battlefield, but the dynamic between its leads. Cumberbatch, who is typically in more serious roles like Doctor Strange or Sherlock Holmes, seems to be going all in for comedy. And at the same time, Olivia Colman brings out her genius as usual, with ease of drama and humor, which allows her to be the only actor to do so.

Cumberbatch is keeping busy in 2025. Before The Roses, he’ll appear in Wes Anderson’s next project, The Phoenician Scheme, dropping June 6. He’s also returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, and will star opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Blood on Snow, a thriller based on Jo Nesbø’s novel.

Colman’s schedule is just as packed. Following her appearance in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, she’s leading a new Pride & Prejudice series, and has signed on for Wicker, a drama directed by Alex Huston Fisher and Eleanor Wilson.

The Roses is set to premiere on August 29, and with a mix of star power, sharp writing, and an iconic story reborn, it might just be the most entertaining trainwreck of a love story you’ll see all year.
