Info in Movie News | Big news for The Hunger Games fans! Lionsgate has officially announced that Sunrise on the Reaping, the latest prequel in the franchise, will hit theaters on November 20, 2026. And here’s the kicker—Billy Ray, one of the screenwriters for the very first Hunger Games movie (2012), is back to pen the script!
According to Collider, Billy Ray is no stranger to high-stakes storytelling. He earned an Oscar nomination for Captain Phillips and has written for movies like Shattered Glass and Richard Jewell. His comeback to the world of Panem is a major event, not least because he will join forces with director Francis Lawrence, who took over the franchise starting from Catching Fire and who has most recently directed The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023).
The story of this movie goes back 24 years before Katniss Everdeen's rise and put us in the life of a young Haymitch Abernathy during the terrible 50th Hunger Games, which were also called the Second Quarter Quell. Unlike regular years, where two tributes from each district fight to the death, this time, four tributes per district were thrown into the arena. And, as we know, only one made it out. The scenario in the movie is so well-arranged that it is on track to become the most intensive Hunger Games tale of all time.
The cast is in preparation, and shooting is scheduled to kick-off in July 2025. The stand-apart creative team and a thrilling background of the start of The Hunger Games franchise, Sunrise on the Reaping, are all set to bring the excitement to a whole new level. Hence, are you prepared for a comeback?
