Info in Movie News |The Highlander franchise is officially getting a fresh start. Amazon MGM Studios, via its newly revitalized United Artists banner, is taking the reins of the long-anticipated reboot of the 1986 cult classic Highlander. This time, Henry Cavill will wield the sword, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski at the helm.
According to Deadline, United Artists and producer Scott Stuber are in the final stages of securing the rights to the franchise, which had been under Lionsgate’s development. The deal reportedly includes not just a theatrical film, but also the potential for a new series set in the Highlander universe. The screenplay is being written by Michael Finch, best known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4.
The production team includes several industry heavyweights: Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, Neal H. Moritz, and 87Eleven Entertainment—Stahelski’s own production company. Joshua Davis of Davis Panzer is also producing, while Patrick Wachsberger joins as executive producer.
For those unfamiliar, the original Highlander starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, chronicling the age-old battles of immortal warriors who can only be killed by beheading. The movie combined three elements, fantasy, swordplay, and a nonlinear narrative that dealt with both historical and present settings and had a famous tagline, “There can be only one.” It may not be a big success at the time of its release, but it certainly has found its fandom, thus leading to the creation of multiple sequels, and a TV series of the same name that became a phenomenon.
This new version is the first major project Stuber launched after leaving Netflix and joining Amazon MGM Studios to breathe life into United Artists. Stuber, who oversaw only expensive movies, serves as a driving force in many other blockbuster films such as Kill Your Darlings with Julia Roberts and Panic Carefully, a project by the show's creator, Sam Esmail.
This move by Cavill is a way of returning to Amazon since he has been overseeing the production of the live-action Voltron adaptation and the creation of the Warhammer 40,000 universe both of the projects belong to him.
Besides the huge appeal of the original, the film team and the budget, and Amazon’s trust in it the new Highlander is going to be one that presents the past next to modern cinema technology. There is no information about its release yet, but the rumors suggest that the movie can be seen as a worthy sequel of the original classic.
