Info in Movie News | Hideo Kojima never does anything halfway, especially when it comes to casting for his games. Recently, the legendary creator behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding shared a fun story about why he picked Margaret Qualley to play Mama, and her twin sister Lockne, in Death Stranding. Surprisingly, it all started with a quirky perfume commercial.
According to Collider, Kojima revealed that he first noticed Qualley after seeing her perform in a Kenzo fragrance ad directed by Spike Jonze. In the ad, Qualley breaks out into a wild, unstructured dance routine inside a fancy building, shifting from graceful to bizarre within seconds. Hideo desired to have the shake of her electricity which happened at once a match to the surreal world of Death Stranding.
The game introduces Margaret Qualley as Mama, a smart and talented girl who works for Bridges and is the person behind much of the Chiral Network, and her doppelganger Lockne. The good but tortured souls of the characters, that were depicted with such love by Qualley, went perfectly with her acting skills being as expressive and as versatile as they were. The fact that the decision on such an important issue as a casting was made following a perfume commercial shows the unpredictability of Kojima's mind and the means he uses to present creativity.
The ad for Kenzo World became the talk of the town when it first appeared, the video was such a hit, people quickly pointed out the similarities between this and Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice video, which features Christopher Walken. What Kenzo gave is more of a total explosion of energy. The video perfectly captures the range of Qualley which Kojima found to be amazing. The transition of her feelings from happiness to deep sorrow emulates the suffering her character goes through in the nerve-racking plotlines of Death Stranding.
