Info in Movie News | Could anyone have imagined that a pack of digital bricks could be the top performer at the box office in 2025? The Minecraft Movie finished off a huge victory by collecting $58 million on Friday and through early previews alone. That is the biggest opening day of the year so far - yes, more significant than Captain America: Brave New World. Evidently, the age of pixels is still the age of the world.
According to Variety, the film was only expected to open around $70 to $80 million over its first weekend. Now? Some projections say it might blow past $150 million, which would not only make it one of the biggest debuts ever, but also possibly dethrone The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the king of video game adaptations.
The wild thing is that it is not some massive CGI epic or Marvel sequel. It is a movie across from a game, the image of which is represented by Lego blocks in 8-bit. However, that was the very idea. With easy-on-the-eye visuals, Minecraft did not get its moment of glory but ran the show on all other grounds like creativity, nostalgia, and community. People not only played it, but also lived in it, creating memories with friends, and taking it to different stages of their lives.
Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), the film keeps that offbeat energy alive. This movie, which has stars like such as Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and young talent like Emma Myers, is the kind of movie that Gen Z kids, as well as millennials who were diamond miners and castle builders after school, would both be able to relate to.
Also, although critics of the movie haven’t been treating it that well, the people that are its viewers nonetheless are thrilled. A B+ grade CinemaScore, which is not an "instant classic" mark, but still is quite good, particularly for a movie that lives on the report of its fans, is what the movie got.
Meanwhile, other films like Disney’s Snow White and Jason Statham’s A Working Man are struggling to stay relevant in theaters. Even horror entries like The Woman in the Yard are fading fast. Minecraft, on the other hand, just booted up and went full survival mode on the box office.
