Having gotten famous through successful television series and large scale film projects, she is now ready to take on the film version of the well-liked video game “Split Fiction” and, with Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu connected to execute the project.

According to Variety, the movie’s script is being written by Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Sweeney will not only star but also serve as an executive producer, collaborating with Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson’s Story Kitchen (formerly dj2 Entertainment) and Chu’s Electric Somewhere production company.

“Split Fiction” is the name of the cutting-edge, futuristic game of Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts that is a combination of fantasy and sci-fi. The game narrates the story of Mio and Zoe who are stuck in the fictional worlds that they had written. The co-op gameplay of this game is shown in the split screen as two friends together fulfill challenging tasks in the world of platforms and fight enemies. The characters each have their own abilities that make them unique. The game was co-written by Hazelight founder and game director Josef Fares and Sebastian Johansson, who are both well-known for their innovative storytelling in the gaming world.

At present, it is yet to be determined if Sweeney will play Mio or Zoe. The characters are equally well-developed, offering an array of emotions, so no matter what role she takes, it is her performance that is going to be the highlight of the show.  

Released on March 6, “Split Fiction” quickly became a major success. It earned critical acclaim and smashed sales expectations, selling over two million copies within its first week on the market, a number that continues to climb rapidly.

Variety previously reported that the Split Fiction film package sparked a bidding war among major studios when it was quietly presented at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. Given Story Kitchen’s strong track record, with projects like Sonic the Hedgehog, Netflix’s animated Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, the upcoming Streets of Rage adaptation at Lionsgate, and Amazon MGM’s ToeJam & Earl movie, expectations are understandably sky-high for this one.

With this, Sweeney has established herself as a force in the action-fantasy movie realm and confirmed once again that she is one of Hollywood’s hottest young talents. An interesting movie, a team of creative professionals behind it that have been working together for a long time, and a director who has a vision for the film have the potential to make Split Fiction one of the best video game adaptations we have ever seen.
