Info in Movie News | Tom Hanks just gave fans a blast of nostalgia with a behind-the-scenes photo from the recording booth, officially kicking off his return as Woody in Toy Story 5. Sharing the moment with his 9.3 million Instagram followers, Hanks dropped a playful hint about what he’s working on: "First day of work on a certain Story Number 5! Need a hint? Disney. Studio B." And just like that, the cowboy’s back in the ride.
According to Collider, longtime Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton is directing this next chapter. While it’s his first time in the director’s chair for a Toy Story film, Stanton’s no stranger to the franchise—he helped write all four previous installments. He’s also the creative force behind Finding Nemo and WALL-E, so fans can relax knowing the story is in capable hands. Stanton’s not only directing, he’s also back on writing duty, bringing both heart and humor to a story that’s evolving in a big way.
This time around, the toys are facing a whole new kind of challenge: the rise of digital entertainment. The upcoming sequel will explore the clash between traditional toys and the modern world of tech-obsessed kids. Expect sparks to fly as Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang go up against flashy, electronics-based toys that seem to be taking over. One wild twist? A full-on squad of Buzz Lightyear figures stuck in “toy mode,” adding a whole new layer of chaos.
While Hanks is just getting started, his co-star Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) revealed earlier this year that he's already deep into the recording process. Speaking to Good Morning America back in January, Allen teased, “I’ve already begun, I’m in the third act now. It’s remarkable what they’ve done… I wish I could say more… Jessie’s in big trouble and needs help. It’s a really cool thing.”
Moreover, a Toy Story movie is not with the voices we have familiarized ourselves with. In the company of Hanks and Allen, the audience can also count on again to hear Joan Cusack (Jessie), Wallace Shawn (Rex), John Ratzenberger (Hamm), Kristen Schaal (Trixie), and Tony Hale (Forky). Still, there are no new character confirmations, but Pixar is good at creating characters that quickly become fan favorites, so everybody can wait for something unexpected.
Toy Story 5 isn’t just a nostalgic trip, it’s a fresh take on growing up, staying relevant, and navigating a fast-changing world. And if early signs are anything to go by, Woody and friends aren’t going down without a fight.
