Info in Movie News | Well, look who finally turned in their blockbuster on time. James Cameron is back, and this time, he's not making us wait a decade. Avatar: Fire and Ash — the third entry in the epic Avatar saga — is officially on track for its December 19, 2025 release, and fans got their first peek at the trailer during CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas.

According to Variety, the exclusive trailer (not yet released online) was shown in full 3D to a room full of theater owners, and yep — it sounds absolutely wild. The footage kicks off on Pandora and introduces two brand-new Na’vi clans: the Wind Traders, peaceful nomads who travel through the skies in these beautifully stylized hot air balloon-like ships, and their fiery rivals, the Ash People, who ride in on flying Ikran with literal flaming arrows. During one intense moment, a Na’vi gets hit and goes down in flames — no kidding.

The story picks up right where Avatar: The Way of Water left off. After the death of his son Neteyam, Jake Sully and his family seek shelter with the ocean-dwelling Metkayina clan. But peace doesn’t last long. Not only are they still fighting the RDA (humans being humans), they now face a darker enemy: the Ash People — former Na’vi who have turned their backs on Eywa, the sacred spirit of Pandora.

Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri) showed up at CinemaCon to intro the footage and gave a little background: “The Wind Traders are a peaceful, nomadic air-traveling clan, and the Ash People are Na’vi who have forsaken Eywa.” In one scene, the Ash leader straight-up tells Neytiri, “Your goddess has no place here.” Yeah, things are getting personal.

James Cameron couldn’t be there in person (he’s still finishing up the movie in New Zealand), but he did send in a video message. “Sorry I couldn’t make it,” he said, “but I think we can all agree it’s better if I keep working on the movie, since this thing is coming at us like a freight train on December 19.” Fair point.

He also dropped a little tease: “The Sully family is really put through the wringer on this one — not just with the humans, but with a new Na’vi threat too.”

And don’t worry, the journey doesn’t stop there. Cameron’s already mapped out the rest of the saga:

  • Avatar 4 is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2029
  • Avatar 5 is slated for December 19, 2031

If Fire and Ash follows in the box office footsteps of the first two, both of which grossed over $2 billion, Avatar could become the first franchise in history to have three $2B+ movies. Not even Marvel can claim that — only Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War made the cut.

Also featured at Disney’s CinemaCon showcase were early looks at Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four: The First Steps, Zootopia 2, Freakier Friday, Tron: Ares, and the live-action Lilo & Stitch. Basically, it’s going to be a big year for theaters.
