John Wick 5 Officially in Development—Keanu Reeves Returns!

Info in Movie News | Lionsgate has officially  that John Wick 5 has been greenlighted, and Keanu Reeves will be coming back to portray the legendary assassin and hitman. The statement was made during CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the studio also announced that director Chad Stahelski (also read: His Sifu Project with Netflix) is coming back to lead the project. Reeves and Stahelski will be the ones in charge of producing it, and the other producers will be Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road. However, the details of the plot and the list of casts that will be involved have not yet been disclosed. In any case, this confirmation has definitely put to rest the months-long speculations about whether John Wick would still be a part of a new movie.

According to Collider, the road to John Wick 5 has been uncertain. When John Wick: Chapter 4 was released back in 2023, it was generally believed to be the last chapter. The movie seemed to be John Wick’s farewell and Reeves also did not seem very deliberate about his return. He did not mince words about the taxing nature of the role, he even humorously mentioned during a press talk related to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that “He died.”

Even without John Wick 5 confirmed, the franchise was already in the process of expanding. The forthcoming Ballerina spin-off, featuring Ana de Armas, will see Reeves in a small role with Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick too. The point-of-view movie is a brilliant idea, especially when it will also keep John Wick universe going. Another way the franchise becomes bigger is the proposed Caine-focused spin-off starring Donnie Yen. Lionsgate had reportedly approached Yen to not only star in but also to direct the movie, and the event can also be considered to be a very good fit for him, as he has already shown his deep commitment to martial arts and action movies. His character was one of the best roles in John Wick: Chapter 4, and a solo movie about Caine would be a great opportunity for the audience to see other dimensions of the assassins' world.

Lionsgate is further stepping up the brand with an animated John Wick prequel movie and Keanu Reeves himself joining the project as the narrator. This signals the franchise's fruitful growth in giving fans yet another novel way of experiencing the action extravaganza. At the same time, The Continental, a TV spin-off which is diving into the advancements of Winston and Charon, has already witnessed a huge fan base putting a positive twist to their stories.

Besides the world of John Wick, Reeves is actively working on BRZRKR, a comic book series of his own that will also be made into a movie. This project serves as a valuable addition to the genre, offering a great triad of thrilling and action-packed stories with a truly appealing star lead character who is co-written by Reeves.

Back to John Wick 5, this movie, although now officially in its initial phase of development, still has no verified release date. Nonetheless, the return of Reeves and the director, Stahelski, to the project means that the next segment will probably not be any less high-powered. Whether the motion picture resuscitates John Wick, explores a different timeline, or provides an unforeseen turn of events, one thing is sure - the Baba Yaga is not dead. If there is anything this franchise has ever made clear is that John Wick should never be underestimated.
