Johnny Depp Returns to Hollywood Spotlight in Day Drinker, Is Jack Sparrow Next?

Johnny Depp Returns in Day Drinker, Eyes Pirates of the Caribbean Role

Info in Movie News | After years away from major Hollywood productions, Johnny Depp is officially back in the spotlight. The 61-year-old actor will headline Day Drinker, a dark thriller directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) and produced by Lionsgate. The film, now in production in Tenerife, Spain, marks Depp’s return to big studio projects after focusing on European and independent cinema since 2018.

Day Drinker follows the story of a mysterious man (Depp) who crosses paths with a bartender (Madelyn Cline) aboard a private yacht. Their entanglement leads them into a dangerous underworld of crime and psychological tension. Penélope Cruz skillfully portrays the primary antagonist of the movie, which further intensifies the situation in the cast dominated by the Spanish actors Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, and Juan Diego Botto.

According to The Times, Day Drinker becomes Depp and Cruz’s one more joint film and the fourth in a series, being Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017) the previous ones. For Depp, he views the role not only as a personal challenge but also as a sign to Hollywood that he is making his comeback to the big screen.

This is Depp's most high-profile mainstream project since his legal victory in 2022, a lawsuit where he defeated Amber Heard in her charge of defaming him. This event made Depp shift to the indie field, where he is best known for his role in the French film Jeanne du Barry and his directorial effort, a biographical movie about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani named Modi.

But can this comeback signal the return of Jack Sparrow, the character Johnny Depp immortalized? While Disney cut ties with the actor in 2018 due to the scandal, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has been with Pirates of the Caribbean for a long time, expressed his optimism in 2023 that Depp could return, by stating,“The audience loves Jack Sparrow, and nobody plays him like Johnny.”

In 2024, Bruckheimer confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Disney is working on two different Pirates projects: a reboot with a new set of performers and a different story that could possibly keep the original saga going. While no official casting has been announced, the possibility of Depp’s return remains a hot topic among fans and insiders alike.

Johnny Depp portrayed Jack Sparrow in all five previous Pirates films:

As Day Drinker heads toward its 2026 release, one thing is clear: Johnny Depp is far from done, and his next chapter may be his most compelling yet.
